Best Time to Install Bees

Installing bees at the right time sets your colony up for success. The timing affects how well your bees settle, how quickly they build comb, and whether they’ll have enough resources to survive winter. Get this right, and your bees will thrive with minimal stress.

Ideal Time of Day

Install your bees in the late afternoon or early evening, ideally between 4 p.m. and sunset. This timing works because forager bees (the older bees that leave the hive to collect nectar, pollen, and water) are naturally returning to the hive at dusk, so your new colony will be calmer and more focused on settling in rather than exploring outside. Bees are also less defensive when they’re preparing to cluster for the night.

Avoid installing in the morning or midday. Morning installations mean your bees will spend the hottest, busiest part of the day disoriented in a new home, which causes unnecessary stress and increases the chance they’ll abscond (abandon the hive entirely). Midday installations are chaotic—your foragers will want to leave immediately, and you’ll have a harder time controlling the installation process.

If you’re installing a package of bees (loose bees shipped in a cage), the late afternoon timing gives them hours to calm down and start exploring their new hive before nightfall. If you’re installing a nucleus colony (a small, already-organized hive), the same principle applies—they’ll settle faster when it’s cooler and quieter.

Rain or heavy cloud cover can shift this slightly. If it’s overcast and cool, you can install an hour or two earlier. If it’s blazing hot, wait until the very end of the day when temperatures drop.

Ideal Time of Year by Region

Spring (March–May) is the best installation window for most beekeepers. Install packages or nucs as soon as they’re available in your area—typically late March through April in the South, April through May in the North. Spring installations give your colony the maximum amount of time to build up strength before winter. A spring-installed colony has many months to grow, store honey, and prepare.

Summer installations (June–July) work but are riskier. A colony installed in June might not build up enough stores for winter, especially in colder climates. However, if you’re in a warm region with a long fall nectar flow, like parts of the South or Southwest, a July installation can work if you’re willing to feed heavily in fall.

Fall installations (August–September) are generally not recommended for beginners. A fall-installed colony faces winter with minimal population and stores. You’d need to feed aggressively all fall and winter, and the colony might not survive anyway. The only exception: if you live in a warm climate where winters are mild (think southern Florida or southern California), a late August installation can work.

Winter installations are not viable anywhere. Don’t even consider it.

Regional specifics matter:

Check with your local beekeeping club or supplier to find out when package bees and nucs are actually available in your area. Availability often dictates timing more than anything else. Also check your local municipal ordinances and, if applicable, HOA rules before installing—some areas restrict when hives may be established or require registration with a local authority.

Weather Conditions to Avoid

Don’t install when temperatures are below 50°F. Cold bees cluster tightly and won’t explore the hive or move to find food and water. Installation stress combined with cold means higher mortality. Wait for a warmer day.

Avoid installing during rain or within a few hours of rain. Wet bees can’t fly, and they’ll be confused and irritable. If rain is forecast for the evening, postpone to the next good day. A light drizzle an hour or two after installation is fine—your bees will be inside by then—but don’t install if rain is actively falling or imminent.

Strong wind (above 15 mph) is problematic. Bees use landmarks to navigate, and heavy wind disorients them. Windy conditions also make it harder for you to control the installation process without bees blowing away. Wait for a calm day.

Extreme heat (above 85°F) at installation time is stressful but manageable if you’re quick and the bees have water access immediately. Anything above 90°F is genuinely risky—bees can overheat in the package or nuc during installation, especially if you’re slow. If it’s that hot, install very early in the morning before the heat peaks, or wait for a cooler day.

Avoid installing during a nectar dearth (a period when little or nothing is blooming and bees have little to forage). Your bees will have nothing to collect, and they may turn aggressive or rob neighboring hives. Install when there’s active bloom—spring is ideal partly because flowers are abundant.

What Happens If You Install Too Late

Installing in late summer or fall means your colony won’t have enough time to build up a large population before winter. A small colony uses more resources per bee to stay warm, so they’ll consume their honey stores faster and may starve before spring. Even if they survive, they’ll be too weak to defend against pests like varroa mites (a parasitic mite that feeds on bees and is one of the most serious threats to a colony’s health) and diseases.

Late installations also mean your bees won’t have time to cap and cure honey properly. Uncapped honey can ferment or absorb moisture, becoming unusable. Your colony needs stored, capped honey—not just any food—to survive winter.

You’ll end up feeding syrup through fall and into winter, which is expensive and time-consuming. You might still lose the colony anyway. A spring-installed colony becomes self-sufficient by late summer; a late-installed colony stays dependent on you.

The bottom line: install in spring. It’s the only season that gives a new colony a realistic chance to thrive without constant intervention.
