When to Stop Feeding Bees Sugar Syrup

Knowing when to stop feeding sugar syrup is just as important as knowing when to start. Feed too long and you’ll waste syrup; stop too early and a young or struggling colony may starve before winter. The key is reading your colony’s actual food stores and the season, not following a calendar.

Signs the Colony No Longer Needs Feeding

The most reliable sign is a full brood box (the lower box where the queen lays eggs and bees store food) or first honey super (the shallower box placed on top specifically for honey storage). Open the hive and look at the frames. If bees have drawn comb—meaning they’ve built out the wax cells on the foundation—and filled it with capped honey and pollen, especially along the top bars and sides, they’re telling you they have reserves. You’re looking for frames that feel heavy when you lift them; a frame full of capped honey weighs noticeably more than an empty one.

Another clear signal is when bees stop taking syrup. If you’ve been feeding and the feeder level hasn’t dropped in 3–5 days, the colony has decided it doesn’t need more. This usually means either they’ve found enough forage outdoors or they’ve stored enough to feel secure. Don’t force-feed a colony that’s refusing syrup.

Watch for increased foraging activity and pollen coming in on the bees’ hind legs. If you see consistent pollen loads, especially in late summer or early fall, it means flowers are blooming and bees are working them. This is your signal that natural food sources are available.

A third indicator is colony strength itself. A strong colony with multiple frames of brood and a laying queen will build stores faster than a weak one. If your colony is genuinely thriving—lots of bees, good brood pattern, calm behavior—it likely doesn’t need hand-feeding to survive.

Stopping Before a Honey Flow

If you know a significant nectar flow is coming—like from a local wildflower bloom, clover, or managed crop—stop feeding 2–3 weeks before it starts. This matters because bees will prioritize storing syrup over nectar if both are available, and syrup in your honey supers defeats the purpose of keeping bees for honey.

The timing depends entirely on your region. If you’re in an area with a predictable spring or summer flow, research what blooms when locally—do not rely on general calendar dates. Ask other beekeepers in your area or check your local beekeeping association’s calendar, as flow timing can vary by weeks even within the same state or country.

When you stop feeding before a flow, you also free up brood box space. Bees will have room to store incoming nectar without feeling crowded, and they’ll move up into your honey supers more readily. If the brood box is already packed with syrup stores, they may not expand upward as quickly.

One practical approach: stop feeding a few weeks before your locally expected summer flow. If no flow materializes and stores look light afterward, you can always resume feeding. It’s easier to feed again than to deal with syrup-contaminated honey.

Fall Feeding Cutoff Timing

In fall, the goal is to stop feeding early enough that bees have time to cap and cure their stores before winter arrives, but late enough that you’ve given them enough food to survive. The right cutoff date varies significantly by location—check with your local beekeeping association or experienced beekeepers in your area for guidance specific to your climate.

The reason for having a cutoff at all is practical: bees need several weeks of cool nights to properly cap and preserve syrup stores. Uncapped syrup has too much water content and can ferment or mold over winter. If you feed right up until hard frost and temperatures drop suddenly, you’ll have liquid stores that won’t keep.

A useful rule: stop feeding when nighttime temperatures consistently drop below 50°F (10°C). At that point, bees won’t fly much anyway, and syrup left in the feeder will just sit there. Bees also slow their processing and storage work as temperatures drop, so late feeding becomes inefficient.

Check your hive’s weight before you stop. Note that actual target weights vary depending on your equipment—deep boxes, medium boxes, wooden versus plastic frames, and moisture content all affect the numbers, so treat any figures as rough guides only and confirm with beekeepers using the same setup in your area. As a general starting point, a well-stocked single deep brood box is noticeably heavy when you tilt it; a two-deep setup heading into winter should feel substantially heavier still. If you’re unsure, err on the side of more stores—starvation is a real winter killer.

Risks of Feeding Too Long

Feeding syrup into very late fall or early winter creates several problems. The main one is that bees can’t properly process and cap the syrup in cold weather. You end up with thin, watery stores that ferment, mold, or crystallize unpredictably over winter. Bees may refuse to eat it when they need it most.

Overfeeding also masks real problems. A colony that’s light on stores needs to be addressed, but if you keep adding syrup to the hive, you won’t know the colony is struggling until it’s too late. You’re treating a symptom instead of solving the problem—which might be a failing queen, disease, or poor genetics.

Late feeding can also cause dysentery. When bees consume large amounts of syrup in late fall and early winter, they can’t fly out to defecate, and the hive becomes contaminated. This weakens the colony heading into the hardest season.

Finally, excessive syrup feeding can create a false sense of security. A beekeeper might think, “I’ll just keep feeding,” without realizing the colony is actually too weak to survive winter no matter how much syrup you give it. Sometimes the kindest choice is to combine two weak colonies in fall rather than feed both separately.
