Signs of a Laying Worker Hive
A laying worker hive is a sign of trouble: your colony has lost its queen and the worker bees have given up on replacing her. Instead, some workers have started laying eggs themselves. Unlike a queen, these workers lay poorly—and you’ll see clear signs in the brood pattern that tell you exactly what’s wrong.
The Multiple-Eggs-Per-Cell Pattern
The most obvious clue is multiple eggs scattered across the bottom of a single cell. A queen lays one egg per cell, positioned upright against the cell wall. A laying worker, by contrast, lacks the queen’s specialized egg-laying anatomy, so she drops eggs loosely into cells. You’ll often see two, three, or even more eggs tumbling around in one cell.
Look at the brood pattern across several frames. If you see this scattered, multiple-egg pattern consistently, you’re almost certainly looking at laying workers. The eggs themselves may also look slightly different—sometimes they’re positioned at odd angles or lying on their side rather than standing upright. This matters because multiple eggs per cell means competition and death for most of them.
The pattern will be random and disorganized, nothing like the tight, orderly pattern a good queen produces. If you see this, act quickly—the sooner you intervene, the better your chances of saving the hive.
Scattered, Raised Brood Cappings
Worker-laid brood gets capped differently than queen-laid brood. Worker pupae develop into drones (males), not workers, because laying workers can only lay unfertilized eggs. Drone cells are normally larger and more domed than worker cells, but in a laying worker hive, you’ll see drone cappings scattered randomly across the brood area—mixed in with worker cells instead of clustered together in a neat drone area.
The cappings themselves often look raised or bumpy, sometimes with a small hole in the center. This is different from the smooth, flat cappings you see on normal worker brood. The bees know something is wrong with this brood, and they may have already started removing some of it before you even notice the hive is queenless.
You might also see very few capped pupae at all. A laying worker hive produces far less brood than a normal hive because the eggs aren’t viable in the way a queen’s are. The colony is essentially failing to reproduce itself. If you look at the brood pattern and see mostly eggs and young larvae with very little capped brood, that’s another red flag.
Why This Happens
A laying worker hive develops when a queen dies or disappears and the colony fails to raise a replacement. Most hives have a backup plan: if the queen is gone, workers will select young larvae and feed them royal jelly to raise a new queen. But if there’s no young brood available—or if the hive is too weak to mount a proper queen-rearing effort—that plan fails.
Once the colony realizes it has no queen and no way to make one, the normal egg-laying suppression that workers experience breaks down. In a healthy hive, the queen’s pheromones keep worker ovaries from developing. Without that chemical signal, a few workers’ ovaries activate and they begin laying. These laying workers are usually older bees with nothing left to lose.
The tragedy is that laying workers can’t save the hive. They lay unfertilized eggs that develop into drones only. A hive full of drones can’t forage, clean, or build comb—they only eat and mate. The colony spirals downward: fewer workers, more drones, less food stored, and no way to recover. Without intervention, a laying worker hive will die within weeks.
How to Fix a Laying Worker Hive
Your best option is to combine the laying worker hive with a strong, queenright colony (one that already has a healthy, laying queen). Do this by placing the laying worker hive’s frames directly into the strong hive, or using the newspaper method (placing a sheet of newspaper between the two hives so the bees chew through it gradually and merge peacefully). The strong hive’s queen pheromones will suppress the laying workers’ ovaries, and the colony will reabsorb into the larger population.
If you want to save the genetics or keep the hive separate, you can introduce a new queen. Buy a mated queen from a reputable breeder and introduce her using a queen cage (a small screened cage that lets the colony accept her gradually over a few days). Success rates are moderate—sometimes the workers reject the new queen, especially if laying workers are deeply entrenched.
Do not try to save a laying worker hive by waiting for it to raise its own queen. It cannot. The eggs laid by workers develop only into drones, never queens.
A weakening, queenless colony can become a target for robbing by other hives, and may itself attempt to rob nearby colonies. Once your fix is underway, monitor neighboring hives for signs of robbing behavior and reduce entrances if needed.
