Why Did My Bees Die Over Winter?

Winter is the hardest season for a bee colony, and losing bees is one of the most frustrating parts of beekeeping. If you opened your hive in spring and found it empty or nearly empty, the cause was almost certainly one of three things: starvation, mites, or moisture damage from the cold. Understanding which one happened helps you prevent it next time.

Starvation as a Cause

Bees don’t hibernate—they cluster together and shiver to stay warm, burning through honey stores to fuel that process. A colony needs roughly 40–60 pounds of honey to survive a typical winter, with colder or longer winters requiring more. If your bees ran out of food, they starved.

This is the easiest problem to prevent and the most common cause of winter loss for beginners. Many new beekeepers harvest too much honey in fall, leaving the colony with barely anything to eat. Others fail to feed bees in autumn when there’s no forage available. If you live somewhere with a real winter, you must leave enough honey on the hive or feed your bees sugar syrup or fondant in late summer and fall.

To know if starvation was the problem, look at the brood box after winter. If it’s empty or nearly empty, and the frames have no honey or pollen left, your bees starved. The cluster will be found near the top or sides of the hive, sometimes still in a tight ball, because they couldn’t move far enough to reach honey on other frames. This is called “isolation starvation”—bees starve while surrounded by food they couldn’t reach because the cluster couldn’t break apart in the cold to move to it.

The fix is simple: in late August or September, check how much honey is on the hive. If you see fewer than 8–10 full frames of honey in the brood box, feed your colony. Use a 2:1 sugar syrup (two parts sugar to one part water) or solid fondant. Keep feeding until the bees stop taking it and the hive is clearly well-stocked. In spring, you’ll see this as a full hive of capped honey.

Untreated Mite Load as a Cause

Varroa mites are parasites that feed on bee fat body tissue and spread viruses. A heavy mite load weakens and kills bees, especially in fall and winter when the colony can’t replace workers fast enough. If you didn’t treat for mites before winter, this is likely why your hive died.

Signs of mite damage in a dead colony are harder to spot than starvation, but there are clues. Open the hive and look at the brood frames. If you see a lot of dead pupae, especially ones that look twisted, shriveled, or have holes in their cappings, mites were probably the culprit. Varroa mites reproduce in sealed brood cells, and heavy infestations cause deformed pupae and high brood mortality. You might also see adult bees with deformed wings or missing legs— these are signs of virus spread by mites.

Another clue: if the hive had plenty of honey left but still died, mites are a strong suspect. The bees didn’t starve; they were too sick and weakened to survive.

Preventing mite-related winter loss means treating your colony in late summer or early fall, before the bees go into winter. Common options include oxalic acid (a naturally derived chemical applied as a vapor or dribble), formic acid (applied via strips), and synthetic miticides. Each has pros, cons, and limitations, so research which is appropriate for your situation. The key is treating early enough—by late August or early September—so the colony goes into winter with a manageable mite load. Always check your local regulations and product labels before treating, as these products are regulated and rules vary by region.

If you didn’t treat this year, plan to treat next year. Mites are nearly impossible to avoid without treatment in most areas.

Moisture and Cold Stress as a Cause

Bees can survive very cold temperatures if they stay dry. The real killer is moisture. When warm air from the cluster rises and hits a cold roof, it condenses into water droplets that drip back down on the bees, chilling them and causing them to break cluster and die.

A hive with good ventilation and a sloped roof or moisture board will shed water instead of letting it pool. If your hive has a flat roof or poor ventilation, moisture builds up inside. On warm winter days, the cluster warms up and produces humidity. On cold nights, that moisture condenses and freezes. Bees caught in wet conditions can’t maintain their cluster temperature and die from cold.

To check if moisture killed your colony, look at the inside of the roof and the top of the frames. If you see ice buildup, water stains, or the wood is visibly damp or moldy, moisture was a problem. The dead bees might be scattered rather than clustered, and they may look damp.

Fix this by ensuring your hive has proper ventilation—either a screened bottom board with an upper entrance, or a vent hole near the top of the hive. Add a moisture board or sloped roof so water runs off instead of dripping. In very wet climates, some beekeepers wrap hives in tar paper to shed rain, leaving ventilation holes open.

How to Tell Which One Happened

Open your hive and examine three things: the amount of honey left, the condition of the brood frames, and the inside of the hive.

Starvation: Empty frames with no honey or pollen. Cluster found at the top or edges. Hive is otherwise clean and dry.

Mites: Dead or deformed pupae on brood frames. Honey may be present. Adult bees show wing deformities. Hive is clean and dry.

Moisture: Ice or water stains inside the hive. Damp wood. Possibly mold. Bees scattered rather than clustered.

Most winter losses involve at least two of these factors working together. A colony weakened by mites, for example, is less able to generate enough heat to cope with moisture or a cold snap, so problems compound quickly. But identifying which factor was most severe helps you make the most useful changes to your management next year—whether that means leaving more honey on the hive, starting a mite treatment program, or improving hive ventilation before the cold sets in.
