How Many Times Can a Bee Sting?

A bee can only sting once—and it dies doing it. This is a fact worth understanding, but honestly, it won’t change how you manage your hives or handle bees as a beginner. What matters more is knowing why this happens and how it shapes bee behavior, so you can work safely and calmly around your colony.

Why Worker Bees Sting Only Once

A worker bee’s stinger is barbed, like a tiny harpoon. When a bee stings you, the barb catches in your skin. As the bee tries to fly away, the stinger rips out of her abdomen, along with the venom sac and part of her digestive tract. She dies shortly after.

This is not a design flaw—it’s a trade-off. The barbed stinger is extremely effective at piercing thick skin and holding the venom in place. For a bee defending the hive against large predators (or humans), that effectiveness matters more than her own survival. She’s defending thousands of sisters and the queen, not just herself.

The venom keeps flowing even after the stinger detaches. The venom sac continues to pump toxin into your skin for several minutes if you don’t remove it. This is why beekeepers are told to scrape off a stinger immediately rather than pinch it—pinching can squeeze more venom in.

Why the Queen Can Sting Repeatedly

The queen bee has a smooth stinger with no barbs. She can sting multiple times without injury to herself. Her stinger evolved for fighting other queens, not for defense against large threats. A queen uses her sting to kill rival queens in the hive—situations where she needs to survive the encounter.

You will almost never see a queen sting anything. As a beginner, you’re unlikely to handle a queen directly, and even experienced beekeepers rarely do. The queen stays deep in the brood nest, protected by workers. Knowing she can sting repeatedly is trivia; knowing she almost never will is what matters.

What Happens to a Bee After It Stings

Once a bee stings, she is finished. The wound is fatal. She may fly back to the hive, but she will die shortly after. The colony loses a worker bee—a real cost. A typical hive has 20,000 to 60,000 workers, so a few stings don’t cripple the colony, but bees don’t sting casually. They sting as a last resort.

Bees also release an alarm pheromone when they sting—a chemical signal that alerts nearby bees to danger. Other bees detect it quickly and become more defensive. This is one reason why staying calm and moving slowly matters: sudden movements and alarm signals compound each other.

Why This Affects Defensive Behavior

Because a sting costs a bee her life, bees are not trigger-happy. They sting only when they perceive a direct threat to the hive. A bee landing on your arm is not preparing to sting—she’s investigating. She will sting if she feels trapped, if you crush her, or if the colony is under active threat.

Understanding this changes how you work with bees. Slow movements, calm handling, and smoke all reduce the alarm signals in the hive. Bees are not aggressive by nature; they’re defensive. A healthy colony with a good queen will be docile most of the time. Aggressive colonies exist, but they’re uncommon in managed hives.
