Spring Hive Inspection Checklist

Spring is your chance to see how your colonies made it through winter and set them up for success in the busy months ahead. A thorough inspection tells you what needs immediate attention and what can wait.

What to Check First

Start your inspection on a warm day—ideally 50°F or above—when bees are flying. Open the hive during midday when foragers are out, which reduces defensive behavior and gives you a clearer picture of what’s inside.

Begin by looking at the entrance. Is it clear of dead bees, or is there a pile blocking it? A few dead bees are normal; a large mound suggests the colony struggled. Check for signs of robbing—bees fighting at the entrance—which means the hive is weak and you’ll need to reduce the entrance temporarily.

Next, remove the top cover and inner cover slowly. Look at the top bars of the frames. Are bees clustered there, or is the hive eerily quiet? A quiet hive in spring is a bad sign. Count how many frames have bees on them—this tells you colony strength at a glance. A strong spring colony should cover at least 6–8 frames in a two-deep setup.

Gently pull a frame from the outer edge of the cluster. This frame should be mostly empty or have just a few bees. If it’s packed with bees, the colony is very strong. If the frame is covered in dead bees or mold, the hive likely didn’t survive. Look at the comb itself: is it clean and intact, or does it show signs of disease, such as a spotty brood pattern or sunken, discolored cappings?

Check the bottom board if your hive has a screened one. Excessive debris—pollen, dead bees, or feces—suggests the colony has been stressed. A little debris is normal.

Signs of Winter Survival vs. Losses

A surviving colony has a tight cluster of live bees, even if it’s small. When you first open the hive, you should hear a gentle hum, not silence. Bees should move purposefully, not sluggishly. If bees are lethargic or won’t move away from the frames, the colony is in trouble.

Look at the brood pattern on frames near the cluster. Spring brood should be solid and symmetrical—a clear circle of capped pupae surrounded by larvae and eggs. A spotty or irregular pattern, especially with dead larvae, signals disease or a failing queen.

Check for the queen. You don’t need to find her, but look for fresh eggs (tiny white dots at the bottom of cells). Eggs mean a queen is present and laying. If there are no eggs and no larvae younger than a few days old, the queen is likely dead or failing. Without a queen in spring, the colony won’t recover in time for the main nectar flow—the period, typically in late spring or early summer, when local plants are producing the most nectar.

A dead-out hive will have a cluster of dead bees, often found on the bottom board or clustered on a few frames. The comb may show signs of starvation—bees dead with their heads in cells. You might also see mold on the comb or a sour smell. Sometimes a dead-out has plenty of honey still in the hive; the bees starved because they couldn’t reach it in cold weather.

Weak colonies that survived show a small cluster (fewer than 3 frames of bees), little to no brood, and possibly a failing queen. These colonies may recover if you help them, but they won’t build fast enough to be productive this year.

Cleaning Up Dead-Outs

If a colony died, you have two choices: save the equipment or discard it.

If the hive died from starvation or cold (not disease), the equipment is valuable. Remove all frames and store them in a dry place where mice can’t access them. You can feed these frames back to a weaker colony in late spring, or use them next year. The comb is still good.

If you suspect disease—especially American foulbrood—look for cappings that are sunken, darkened, or perforated, and larvae that have turned dark brown. If you insert a twig or matchstick into a suspect cell and the contents stretch into a ropy thread as you pull it away, that is a strong indicator of American foulbrood. Do not reuse frames from a hive with suspected AFB, and do not give them to another colony. American foulbrood spores persist for decades and will kill any colony that contacts them. Importantly, AFB is a regulated disease in most U.S. states and many other jurisdictions—before burning or burying equipment, contact your state apiarist or local agricultural authority. They can confirm the diagnosis and advise you on the legally required disposal method.

Clean the hive box itself with a hive tool and a stiff brush. You don’t need to scald or chemically treat it unless you’re certain disease was present. Sunlight is a good disinfectant; leave the box in the sun for a few days if possible.

Store cleaned equipment in a dry shed or garage. Cover it to keep mice out. Frames stored this way will be ready for new bees next spring or later this season if you split a strong colony.

Setting Up for Spring Buildup

Once you’ve confirmed a colony survived, help it build fast. Start by removing any empty boxes. A strong colony in spring should be in one deep box (or two mediums). Empty space cools the hive and wastes the colony’s energy.

Check food stores. A spring colony typically needs somewhere between 20 and 40 or more pounds of honey and pollen to bridge the gap to the main nectar flow—the exact amount depends on your region, climate, and colony size. Frames on the outer edges should have some honey; frames near the brood should have pollen. If stores look light, feed sugar syrup (1:1 ratio, meaning one part sugar dissolved in one part water by weight) until natural pollen and nectar become abundant.

Reduce the entrance if the colony is weak. A small entrance hole (about the size of a dime) helps a weak colony defend itself and keeps robbers out. Once the colony is strong and covering all frames, open it back up.

Add a second box only after the first is 80% full of bees and brood. Adding space too early chills the brood and slows growth. Wait until late April or early May in most regions.
