How Much Honey Do Bees Need to Survive Winter?

Bees don’t hibernate—they cluster together and shiver to stay warm through winter, burning through their honey reserves constantly. How much they need depends on your climate, how long winter lasts, and how cold it gets. Running short means a dead hive by spring, so this is one of the most important numbers to know before November arrives.

Typical Requirement by Climate

A healthy hive typically needs 60 to 90 pounds of honey to survive a standard winter in temperate climates like most of the northern United States. In milder regions (southern US, coastal areas), 40 to 60 pounds often suffices. In harsh climates (upper Midwest, Canada, northern New England), aim for 90 to 120 pounds.

These numbers account for a full winter lasting 4 to 6 months. Bees consume roughly 1.5 to 2 pounds of honey per week during active winter clustering, though consumption spikes during the coldest weeks. A large, healthy hive burns more than a smaller one.

The key variable is temperature consistency. A region with many warm spells (above 50°F) lets bees break cluster, fly out to defecate, and move around the hive—using less energy. Yo-yo temperatures (freezing, then 60°F, then freezing again) are particularly hard on colonies because bees keep breaking cluster and reheating.

Don’t confuse the honey bees need with the honey you can harvest. These are separate calculations. You harvest surplus after ensuring winter stores are secure.

How to Estimate Stores by Weight

The most reliable way is to weigh your hive in fall. Weigh it in late September or early October (before cold weather sets in), then again in spring. The difference tells you exactly what was consumed. For next year, you’ll know your baseline.

If you don’t have a scale, use the frame-weight method. A fully capped frame of honey weighs roughly 4 to 5 pounds. Count the number of frames that are at least 75% capped with honey (not brood, not pollen). Multiply by 4.5. This gives you a ballpark figure. A standard deep frame fully capped is about 5 pounds; a medium frame is about 3 pounds.

Another approach: lift the back of the hive. Get under the back edge and lift. A hive with adequate stores will feel noticeably heavy—you should struggle a bit. This is subjective but works if you’ve handled a few hives. A light hive is a warning sign.

In late August or early September, do a brood check. Open the hive and look at the top frames. If you see mostly brood and little capped honey, your bees are behind. If you see thick bands of capped honey across the top and sides, you’re likely fine. This visual check takes 10 minutes and guides whether you need to feed.

Don’t overthink this. You’re looking for “enough” not an exact number. Erring on the side of too much is fine—bees won’t starve if they have 100 pounds in a mild winter. They will starve if they have 40 pounds in a harsh one.

What to Do If Stores Are Short

If you realize in September or October that stores are light, start feeding immediately. Don’t wait. Bees need time to process and store syrup before cold weather locks them down.

Use a 2:1 sugar syrup (2 parts sugar, 1 part water by weight) in fall. Mix it hot so the sugar dissolves, then let it cool. This ratio mimics the concentration of honey and is what bees need for winter stores. A 1:1 ratio (equal parts) is too watery for fall feeding—it’s better for spring.

Feed using a top feeder (a box that sits on the hive) or entrance feeder (a tray at the hive entrance). Top feeders are easier to refill without opening the hive. You can also use a baggie feeder—a ziplock bag filled with syrup, laid on top of the frames with a small slit cut in one corner.

Feed until bees stop taking it or temperatures drop below 50°F consistently. In most regions, this means feeding through September and into October. Bees will cap and store what they take.

How much to feed? If stores are very light, aim to add 40 to 60 pounds of syrup. A gallon of 2:1 syrup weighs about 11 pounds, so you’re looking at 4 to 6 gallons minimum. Some beekeepers feed 10 gallons or more in a short window if stores are critically short.

Feeding is not cheating—it’s management. Commercial beekeepers feed routinely. If your bees didn’t store enough (due to a poor nectar flow, disease, or a late start), supplementing them is the right call.

Regional Differences in Winter Length

Winter length varies wildly across North America. Upper Midwest and Canada face 5 to 6 months of sustained cold (November through April). Bees cluster continuously and rarely fly. Stores need to last that entire span.

Mid-Atlantic and Northeast see 4 to 5 months of winter (December through April), with occasional warm spells. On warmer days above 50°F, bees take cleansing flights—brief excursions outside the hive to defecate, since they won’t soil the cluster. Stores need to stretch but aren’t under constant pressure.

Pacific Northwest often has mild, wet winters. Bees might cluster only 2 to 3 months, but they can’t fly in rain or cold drizzle. Stores still matter, but the demand is lower than in the Midwest.

Southern US (Georgia, Texas, the Carolinas) rarely sees sustained freezing. Bees might cluster for a few weeks total. Stores of 40 to 50 pounds are usually enough. Some beekeepers in these regions can keep bees year-round with minimal winter prep.

Coastal California and similar mild zones might not cluster at all in mild years. Bees forage sporadically. Winter “stores” are less critical, though you still shouldn’t let a hive go into winter with empty combs.

Check what experienced beekeepers in your exact area do. Local beekeeping clubs have real data on what works. A beekeeper in zone 5 and one in zone 8 are solving different problems.
