Queen Cell vs. Supersedure Cell

Queen cells are one of the most important things you’ll learn to spot as a beekeeper. Your colony builds them for specific reasons, and knowing which type you’re looking at tells you whether your bees are planning to swarm, replace a failing queen, or something else entirely. Misidentifying them can lead to lost colonies or missed opportunities to prevent swarming.

What a Swarm Queen Cell Looks Like

Swarm queen cells are built on the edges of the comb—typically along the bottom or sides of frames. They’re the bee equivalent of an emergency exit sign. These cells are large, rough, and peanut-shaped, hanging vertically downward like a tiny acorn. They’re usually built in clusters of several cells, sometimes a dozen or more on a single frame.

Bees construct swarm cells when the colony is crowded and preparing to divide. Inside each cell, you’ll find a larva floating in royal jelly—the rich food that turns a regular larva into a queen. Swarm cells appear when your colony is doing well and congested. The bees have decided the hive is too full, so they’re raising new queens to take with them when they leave. You’ll typically see them in spring or early summer, though they can appear anytime the colony feels congested. If you find capped swarm cells, your bees may leave within days.

The key detail: these cells are multiple and peripheral. If you see three or more queen cells scattered around the edges of your brood frames, you’re almost certainly looking at swarm preparation.

What a Supersedure Cell Looks Like

Supersedure cells are built when the colony needs to replace the queen— usually because she’s aging, failing to lay well, or injured. These cells look different in almost every way. They’re built in the middle of the comb, often directly on the brood pattern itself (the area of the frame where the queen has been laying eggs and raising young bees), not hanging from edges. You’ll typically find just one, maybe two or three at most.

The cell is still peanut-shaped and larger than a worker cell. Inside, you’ll find a larva in royal jelly, just like in a swarm cell. The difference is context: these cells appear when the colony is not crowded, and they’re built over the existing brood pattern rather than hanging from frame edges.

Supersedure cells usually appear when a queen is genuinely failing—she might be laying poorly, producing too many drones, or simply getting old. Sometimes a colony builds them for no obvious reason; bees have their own quality standards. You might see them in late summer or fall, or even mid-season if something’s wrong with the queen.

The key detail: these cells are singular or few and central. If you see one or two queen cells right in the middle of your brood, your colony is likely replacing the queen, not swarming.

The most reliable way to tell them apart is location and number. Swarm cells cluster on the periphery; supersedure cells sit alone or in pairs in the brood nest. If you’re unsure, take a photo and look at the overall pattern. Multiple cells on frame edges = swarm. One cell in the middle = supersedure.

It’s worth noting that real hives don’t always follow the textbook. You may occasionally find cells that don’t fit neatly into either category—for example, a colony under significant stress may build cells in unusual locations. Use location and number as your starting point, then factor in the colony’s overall condition: is it crowded and booming, or does it seem to be struggling? That context will usually confirm what you’re seeing.

What to Do When You Find One

If you find swarm cells: Act quickly. First, check whether your original queen is still in the hive—if she has already left with a swarm, removing all queen cells will leave your colony with no way to raise a new queen, which can be fatal for the colony. If the queen is still present, you have options. You can split the colony by moving the queen and some brood to a new hive, which reduces crowding and satisfies the swarming impulse. You can also let them swarm if you’re comfortable with it—you’ll lose bees, but the remaining colony will survive if at least one queen cell is left intact. Don’t panic; just decide what fits your goals.

If you find supersedure cells: Leave them alone. The colony knows what it’s doing. Let the new queen emerge and mate. The old queen will usually disappear or be killed by the workers over time. This is a normal, healthy process. Don’t intervene unless the colony is queenless for more than a few weeks.

In either case: Mark the date you found the cells and check back in a week. Swarm cells will have emerged or been torn down. Supersedure cells will have a new queen or will have failed. This follow-up is how you learn what actually happened and build your intuition for reading your colony’s intentions.
