Signs of Overheating in a Hive

Honeybees manage their hive temperature carefully—they keep the brood (baby bees) at around 95°F year-round. When outside temperatures spike or airflow is blocked, bees work overtime to cool down, and you’ll see clear warning signs. Learning to spot these signals early can save your colony from stress, disease, or even collapse.

Bearding Behavior Explained

Bearding is when hundreds or thousands of bees cluster on the outside of the hive entrance and cover the front wall. They hang in layers, almost like a beard, which is where the name comes from. This is one of the most visible signs your hive is too hot.

Bees do this to reduce the number of bodies inside the hive, lowering internal temperature through sheer volume reduction. It’s not aggression—they’re just trying to survive. You’ll typically see bearding on hot evenings or nights when the hive hasn’t cooled down from the day.

Bearding alone isn’t always an emergency. On a single hot day, it’s normal. But if you see it repeatedly, especially if it lasts into the night or happens on cooler days, your hive needs better ventilation or shade. Check whether the entrance is partially blocked by dead bees, debris, or even burr comb (extra wax bees build between frames). Clear any obstruction carefully.

Also look at your hive’s location. If it’s in full sun all afternoon with no shade, that’s a fixable problem. Even moving the hive a few feet to catch afternoon shade, or adding a simple board roof overhang, can make a real difference.

Wax Softening and Comb Collapse Risk

Honeycomb is made of beeswax, which softens around 145°F. While the hive’s interior normally stays around 95°F, a severely overheated hive can reach dangerous temperatures. When wax softens, combs sag, warp, or collapse entirely—and when that happens, brood (eggs and larvae) dies, honey spills out, and the hive’s structure falls apart.

You might notice this by opening the hive and seeing combs that aren’t perfectly straight, or frames that feel slightly soft to the touch. Collapsed comb looks like a melted mess—it’s unmistakable and heartbreaking. By the time you see actual collapse, the damage is done, so prevention is critical.

Comb collapse is most common in new hives with thin, newly-built comb, or in hives that are severely overcrowded with poor ventilation. It can also happen if you leave a hive in direct sun with no shade during a heat wave, or if you accidentally seal up ventilation holes thinking you’re protecting the hive from cold (a common beginner mistake in spring).

If you suspect wax is softening but hasn’t collapsed yet, act immediately. Improve ventilation by ensuring the entrance is clear and unobstructed. If you use an inner cover, make sure the ventilation hole isn’t blocked. Some beekeepers prop the inner cover slightly to create an air gap—this is a quick, reversible fix. Never seal a hive completely, even in cool months, without leaving some airflow.

Fanning Behavior at the Entrance

Fanning is when bees position themselves at the entrance and beat their wings rapidly to push air through the hive. You’ll see them facing outward, wings vibrating in a focused, purposeful way. It’s different from normal flight activity—it’s stationary and intense.

Bees fan to pull cooler air in and push hot air out. A few fanning bees at the entrance is normal, especially on warm afternoons. But if you see dozens of bees fanning for hours, or if fanning continues into the evening, the hive is working hard to cool itself.

You might also notice fanning at the top of the hive if you use a screened bottom board or top ventilation. Some bees will position themselves there to exhaust hot air upward. This is actually a good sign that your hive has ventilation options—it means the bees can access relief.

Fanning combined with bearding is a stronger signal that cooling is a real problem. If you see both behaviors consistently, your hive needs shade, better airflow, or possibly a larger entrance. Beginner hives sometimes use entrance reducers (small wooden blocks that limit the opening) to help with pest control in winter. In summer, remove them completely—a full entrance gives bees more options for air exchange.

Immediate Steps to Cool the Hive

First, ensure the entrance is completely clear. Dead bees, propolis buildup, or debris can choke airflow. A clean entrance is free and essential.

Second, add shade. If the hive sits in afternoon sun, position a board, umbrella, or shade cloth to block direct rays between 2 and 5 p.m. You don’t need to shade it all day—just the hottest hours. This single change often eliminates overheating problems.

Third, check ventilation. If you use an inner cover, confirm the ventilation hole isn’t blocked by comb or debris. If you use a solid bottom board, consider switching to a screened bottom board, which improves airflow during hot weather. If you already have a screened bottom board, make sure nothing is blocking it from underneath.

Fourth, ensure adequate space. A crowded hive generates more heat. If bees are covering every frame and you see bearding, add another box if the season allows. In midsummer, a strong hive might need two boxes just to have room to breathe.

Finally, resist the urge to open the hive repeatedly to check on things. Every time you open it, you release cooler air and disrupt their cooling efforts. Trust what you see from the outside—bearding and fanning tell you everything you need to know.
