Signs of Starvation in a Hive

Starvation is one of the most preventable ways a hive dies. Unlike disease or pests, you can see it coming and stop it—but only if you know what to look for. Here’s how to spot a hungry hive before it’s too late.

Weight and Stores Signs

The simplest way to catch starvation early is to lift the back of your hive. A healthy hive in late fall or winter should feel heavy—genuinely heavy, like lifting a loaded suitcase. If it feels light, that’s your first red flag.

When you open the hive, look at the frames. Bees need stored honey and pollen to survive. In late summer and fall, you should see frames that are capped with wax (this seals the honey inside) or at least frames with honey visible in the cells. If you see mostly empty comb or only a thin ring of stores around the brood nest, the colony is in trouble.

Pay attention to where the stores are. Honey should be toward the outer edges of the frames and in the upper boxes. If all the stores are gone from the upper box and the lower box is light too, the bees have eaten through their winter supply. They may have only weeks left.

A practical test: pick up a frame of capped honey. It should feel noticeably heavier than an empty frame. Weighing your hive before winter and again in late winter is a useful habit—if the hive has dropped significantly and it’s still weeks until spring, feeding is urgent.

Bees Found Head-First in Cells

This is the most heartbreaking and definitive sign of starvation: bees with their heads buried deep in cells, their rear ends sticking out. They died reaching for honey that wasn’t there.

When you see this, the hive is already dead or dying. The bees literally starved to death with their heads in empty cells or cells containing only a tiny bit of honey or pollen they couldn’t quite reach. It happens because bees cluster together for warmth in cold months, and they can’t break cluster to move to nearby honey stores—or the stores are genuinely gone.

This is why weight checks matter so much. You want to catch starvation before you see dead bees in cells. But if you do see them, it tells you exactly what happened: the colony ran out of food. If it’s still winter, you may still save sister colonies or split the remaining bees into a smaller hive with adequate stores. If it’s spring and only a few bees remain, the hive is likely beyond saving.

Check the brood nest area closely. Starvation deaths often cluster around where the queen was laying, because that’s where the bees stayed to protect developing brood.

Behavioral Signs Before Collapse

Before starvation kills a hive, the bees show clear behavioral changes. Recognizing these gives you time to act.

A starving hive becomes unusually quiet and inactive. There’s less flight activity at the entrance, even on warm days when you’d normally see foragers coming and going. The colony seems lethargic. This happens because the bees are rationing energy—they’re not flying out to forage because there’s nothing to find, or they’re too weak.

You’ll also notice the cluster is tighter and more defensive than usual. Starving bees become irritable and aggressive, partly from stress and partly because they’re protecting what little they have left. They may attack you more readily during inspections.

In late winter or early spring, watch for bees clustered on the bottom board or crawling on the ground outside the hive. This is often a sign of starvation combined with disease, but starvation alone can cause it. The bees are too weak to stay in the hive.

Another sign: the brood pattern becomes spotty or stops entirely. The queen slows or stops laying because there isn’t enough food to feed larvae. If you see a hive with almost no brood in early spring, starvation is a likely culprit.

Emergency Feeding Response

If you catch starvation early enough, you can save the hive. The key is acting fast and feeding the right way.

For immediate emergency feeding, use a frame feeder (a frame-sized box that holds syrup) or a top feeder. Fill it with a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water (by weight), or use 2 parts sugar to 1 part water for thicker syrup that lasts longer. Put it right next to the brood nest so the bees can access it immediately without breaking cluster.

If it’s very cold and the bees are clustered, they may not move to a feeder. In that case, place a frame of honey from another hive directly into the cluster if you have one available. This is faster than syrup.

Feed heavily and consistently. Don’t give small amounts and check back in a week. Give enough that the bees have food for the rest of winter or until flowers bloom. This might mean feeding 10–20 pounds of sugar (in syrup form) for a weak colony.

Stop feeding once the hive has built up adequate stores or once spring flowers are reliably blooming. You don’t want to create a dependency or encourage robbing from other hives.
