How Long Does a Queen Bee Live?
A queen bee’s lifespan is one of the most dramatic facts in beekeeping: a queen can live 2–5 years, while her workers live only weeks. Understanding how long your queen will last helps you plan for replacements and recognize when a hive is declining. Honestly, though, you don’t need to memorize this to keep bees—but it’s useful knowledge when things go wrong.
Typical Lifespan Range
A healthy, well-mated queen typically lives 2 to 5 years in a managed hive. Most beekeepers see their best production during years one and two, when the queen is laying at peak capacity—sometimes 1,500 to 2,000 eggs per day during spring and summer. By year three, egg-laying often drops noticeably. By year four or five, if the queen is still alive, she’s usually not worth keeping because the colony’s population and honey production have declined significantly.
In the wild, queens often don’t last as long because colonies swarm, get sick, or starve. In a managed hive with good nutrition, disease prevention, and a beekeeper who removes pests like Varroa mites, queens tend toward the longer end of that range.
What Shortens a Queen’s Productive Life
Several factors can cut a queen’s useful life short. Disease and parasites are the biggest culprits—Varroa mites weaken colonies and reduce a queen’s laying capacity years before she dies. Poor nutrition also matters: a colony that doesn’t have enough pollen in spring won’t support a queen laying at full strength, and she may never recover her vigor. Genetic factors play a role too; some queens are simply more robust than others.
Accidents happen, too. A queen can be crushed when you close the hive, injured during handling, or killed by the workers if the colony is stressed or queenless for too long. Laying workers—female workers that start laying unfertilized eggs when a colony has been without a queen long enough that normal worker suppression breaks down—sometimes appear in a queenless hive, but they can also appear if a queen is failing and not suppressing worker reproduction properly. Once laying workers take over, the colony is very difficult to recover. If you suspect this situation, consult an experienced local beekeeper or your regional beekeeping association before acting, as the best response and any legal considerations around colony disposal vary by location.
Inbreeding can also shorten a queen’s productive years. If you’re re-queening from a local supplier, this is rarely a problem, but if you’re trying to raise your own queens from the same colony year after year, genetic diversity suffers.
Signs of an Aging Queen
The first sign is usually a drop in brood pattern (the arrangement of eggs, larvae, and developing bees across the comb). Instead of a solid, compact patch of capped brood—cells sealed with wax while young bees develop inside—you’ll see scattered empty cells, holes, or a smaller brood area overall. This happens gradually; a two-year-old queen might lay slightly less densely than a one-year-old, but it’s often hard to spot.
Drone-laying is another warning. If you see a lot of drone brood—larger, dome-capped cells containing male bees—or if workers are laying eggs, the queen is either gone or failing. A failing queen may also lay multiple eggs in a single cell—a sign her reproductive system is breaking down.
Colony population decline without obvious disease is a classic indicator. If your hive was strong in spring but dwindles by midsummer with no signs of illness, a failing queen is the likely cause. You’ll also notice fewer foragers returning because there aren’t enough young workers being raised to replace the ones that age out.
Some queens simply disappear—she dies or gets lost, and the colony becomes queenless. This is less common in a managed hive but happens.
When to Proactively Requeen
Most beekeepers requeen after the second productive season—so in the hive’s third calendar year—rather than waiting for the queen to fail. This keeps colonies strong and honey production consistent. If you’re running hives primarily for honey, requeening every two years is standard practice.
If you notice a poor brood pattern, declining population, or drone-laying in a hive that’s only one year old, requeen immediately. Don’t wait. A failing young queen suggests a genetic problem, and the colony won’t recover on its own.
Requeening is straightforward: find and remove the old queen, then introduce a new one using a cage method (give the colony a few days to accept her). It costs money and takes time, but a strong, young queen will outproduce a failing older one by a wide margin.
