Summer Hive Management Checklist

Summer is when your bees are at peak productivity, but also when problems can escalate quickly if you’re not paying attention. This checklist covers the essential tasks that keep colonies healthy and productive during the warmest months.

Monitoring Nectar Flow

Nectar flow is your bees’ main food source, and understanding what’s happening in your area helps you manage the hive better. A strong nectar flow means bees are bringing in surplus honey you might harvest; a dearth means they’re struggling to find food.

Watch your hive entrances in early morning and late afternoon. Bees returning with full pollen baskets and moving quickly suggest good forage. If traffic slows noticeably or pollen loads disappear, nectar availability may be dropping. You can also weigh your hive weekly — a gain of roughly 2–3 pounds per week can indicate active flow in a strong, well-established colony, though this varies considerably by colony size and region. No gain or consistent losses suggest a dearth.

During a strong flow, bees draw comb and fill cells rapidly. You’ll see this when you open the hive — frames fill visibly week to week. During a dearth (common in mid-summer in many regions), bees may stop drawing comb and even consume stored honey. If a dearth lasts more than a week or two, consider feeding light sugar syrup to prevent starvation, especially in smaller colonies.

Nectar flow timing varies by region and year. In northern climates, peak flow might be June–July. In southern areas, it could extend through August. Local beekeepers or your regional beekeeping association can tell you when to expect the main flow in your area. Plan your honey super additions and harvesting around these patterns.

Watching for Robbing Behavior

Robbing occurs when bees from one colony steal honey from another, and it escalates quickly in summer heat when nectar is scarce. A robbing outbreak can collapse a weak colony in days and spread disease between hives.

Learn to spot the signs early. Robber bees move erratically around the entrance, darting in and out without the purposeful gait of foragers. You’ll see bees fighting at the entrance — legitimate foragers land and walk straight in, while robbers hesitate and circle. Robbed colonies become defensive and aggressive as they try to protect their stores. If you see unusual aggression or entrance battles, robbing is likely underway.

Prevent robbing by keeping hive entrances small. Use entrance reducers throughout summer, especially if you have multiple hives. A 3/8-inch opening is ideal — small enough that guard bees can defend it easily, large enough for normal traffic. Never leave a hive open or exposed during inspections; work quickly and close it up promptly.

If robbing starts, act immediately. Reduce the entrance further to a single bee-width opening. If it’s severe, close the entrance completely for 24–48 hours, then reopen with a small reducer. Move the robbed hive to a new location if possible — even 10 feet away can confuse robber bees. Never leave frames or equipment exposed outside; store everything in a sealed container or bring it inside.

Weak colonies are robbing targets. If you have a struggling hive, consider combining it with a stronger one rather than watching robbers finish it off. This also prevents the robbers from becoming emboldened and attacking other colonies.

Continued Mite Monitoring

Varroa mites reproduce rapidly in summer warmth, and by late summer an untreated colony can collapse from mite-related viruses. Regular monitoring tells you whether treatment is needed and when.

One monitoring option is the sticky board method: insert a screened bottom board (a hive floor with a mesh screen that lets debris fall through) with a sticky board — a disposable sheet coated in a non-drying adhesive — underneath for 24 hours, then count the mites that fall. This gives you a daily mite drop count. Because treatment thresholds vary by region, time of year, and beekeeping authority, consult your local beekeeping association or cooperative extension service for the numbers that apply in your area. Alternatively, use the alcohol wash method — submerging a sample of roughly 300 bees in alcohol to dislodge and count mites — or the powdered sugar shake method, which coats bees in powdered sugar to dislodge mites so they can be counted without killing the bees. Both give you a mite count from a sample of bees. Monitoring every two weeks during summer gives you the earliest warning of a rising population.

If mite counts are climbing, treat before late July. Waiting until August means a treated colony may still decline before winter. Approved treatments include formic acid (sold under brand names such as Mite Away Quick Strips) — an organic acid that penetrates capped brood cells to kill mites — and oxalic acid, another organic acid most effective when applied in late summer or winter when little or no capped brood is present. Synthetic miticide options include fluvalinate and amitraz, which are pesticide strips placed between frames. Follow label instructions exactly — improper use reduces effectiveness and risks resistance. Some beekeepers use integrated pest management (IPM), an approach that combines multiple strategies to reduce mite loads while minimizing chemical use; one mechanical IPM technique is drone brood removal, which involves periodically cutting out frames of capped drone (male bee) brood, since Varroa preferentially reproduce in drone cells.

Brood patterns matter too. Spotty or irregular brood suggests mite damage or disease. Healthy brood should be solid and tightly packed. If you see unusual patterns, look for mites on pupae or adult bees during inspection.

Honey Super Management

Honey supers are where bees store surplus honey for you to harvest. Adding them at the right time and managing them properly maximizes your harvest and keeps the colony organized.

Add your first super when bees have drawn and filled the lower brood box to about 80% capacity — roughly 6–7 frames of brood and stores. This timing varies by region and flow strength; in a strong flow, add it early. Use a queen excluder — a flat grid with gaps large enough for worker bees to pass through but too small for the larger queen — between the brood box and super to keep the queen out. This ensures the super fills with honey rather than brood (eggs and larvae).

Add additional supers as needed. A good rule: add the next super when the current one is about half-full. Don’t wait until it’s completely full, or bees may slow their work. In a strong flow, you might add multiple supers at once.

Inspect supers every 7–10 days during active flow. Bees should be drawing comb and filling cells. If a super sits empty for more than two weeks, bees may not be interested — this sometimes means the flow has ended or the colony isn’t strong enough to use it.

Plan your harvest timing around the main flow’s end. Bees need time to cap honey (seal it with wax), which indicates it’s properly ripened and ready. Harvest when most cells in a super are capped, typically after the main flow ends. Leave at least one full super of honey for the colony’s winter stores — never harvest everything.
