Varroa Mite Treatment Threshold Calculator

Varroa mites are small parasites that feed on honeybee fat body tissue and weaken colonies. Knowing when to treat is more important than treating constantly—treat too early and you waste money and risk resistance, treat too late and your colony collapses. This calculator helps you decide based on actual mite counts, not guesswork.

What Mite Count Triggers Treatment

A widely used treatment guideline is 3 mites per 100 bees, or roughly 3%. This number comes from research showing that colonies at or above this level face rapid mite population growth that leads to disease and collapse, while colonies below it generally have more time before reaching a damaging threshold.

However, this isn’t a hard rule everywhere. In cooler climates with shorter brood seasons, you might tolerate slightly higher counts in late summer because the colony will have fewer brood cycles before winter. In warm climates with year-round brood, even 2% can be dangerous because mites reproduce faster.

Your treatment threshold also depends on your colony’s health and age. A strong, young queen with a large worker force can handle a higher mite load than a weak colony or one heading into winter. If your colony is already showing signs of disease (spotty brood pattern, deformed wings, unusual aggression), treat immediately even if the count is below 3%—the mites are already causing damage.

Most beekeepers check mite counts every 2–3 weeks during the active season (April through September in northern regions). If you hit 3%, treat within a few days. If you’re at 2%, recheck in a week. If you’re below 1%, you can usually wait another 2–3 weeks before checking again.

How to Use a Sugar Roll Count with This Threshold

A sugar roll count is the most practical method for beginners because it’s cheap, non-destructive, and gives reliable results. Here’s how it works: collect about 300 bees (roughly a half cup) from a frame with mostly young bees, put them in a jar with powdered sugar, shake for 30 seconds, and count the mites that fall through a screen into a tray below.

To convert your count to a percentage: if you collected 300 bees and found 12 mites, that’s 4 mites per 100 bees, or 4%. Compare this to your threshold. If your threshold is 3%, you’re above it and should treat.

The key is collecting the right bees. Take them from a frame of capped brood or newly emerged bees, not from the food stores or the very edge of the cluster. Mites congregate on nurse bees and young bees, so you’ll get a more accurate picture this way. If you grab mostly forager bees, your count will be artificially low.

Do the count in a white tray or container so you can see the mites clearly—they’re tiny and dark, about the size of a pinhead. Count carefully and recount if the number seems off. Some beekeepers do two jars per hive and average the results for better accuracy.

Record your counts in a notebook or phone app. Tracking trends over time matters more than a single count. If your count went from 1% to 3% in one week, you have a problem and should treat immediately. If it’s holding steady at 1%, you can wait longer.

Seasonal Threshold Differences

Spring thresholds are lower because colonies are building up and can’t afford to lose bees to mites. Many beekeepers treat at around 2% in April and May as a general guideline, though your local extension service or beekeeping association may recommend a slightly different figure for your region. The colony needs every worker it can get.

Summer thresholds (June–July) are often cited at 3% because the colony is at peak population and the queen is laying heavily. Mites reproduce quickly, but so do bees. Still, don’t ignore counts above 3%.

Late summer and fall thresholds should be stricter again—many beekeepers aim to treat at 2% or lower in August and September. The colony is preparing for winter and can’t replace dead bees. A high mite count in September will devastate the winter cluster. This is the most critical time to keep mites under control.

Winter treatment depends on your region and treatment method. In cold climates, many beekeepers treat in late fall (October–November) with oxalic acid, which works well on colonies with little or no brood. Don’t wait until December—by then it’s often too cold to treat safely.

What Happens If You Wait Too Long

If you ignore a high mite count, the colony can collapse rapidly. Mites spread viruses (especially deformed wing virus), and infested bees become weak, short-lived, and unable to perform their jobs. The workforce shrinks faster than the queen can replace it.

You’ll see spotty brood patterns, crawling bees on the ground, and a sudden lack of foragers. By the time you notice, it’s usually too late to save the colony. Even if you treat then, the damage is done.

High mite loads also suppress the colony’s immune function, making bees more vulnerable to viral diseases and secondary infections. Treating early prevents a cascade of problems.

The economic cost is real: a dead colony costs you significantly more in lost bees, equipment, and time than a timely treatment does. The math is simple.
