Signs of Swarm Preparation
Your colony is preparing to swarm when the bees decide they’ve outgrown their home. Recognizing the early warning signs gives you a narrow window—usually 1–3 weeks—to act before half your bees leave. Here’s what to actually look for in the hive.
Queen Cells Along Frame Bottoms
The most reliable sign of swarm prep is the appearance of queen cells, and they show up in a specific pattern. Look at the bottom edges of your frames, especially on the outer combs. You’ll see cells that stick out from the comb like peanut shells, usually larger than drone cells and definitely larger than worker cells. They’re often clustered in groups of several cells.
These are swarm cells, and they’re different from emergency queen cells (which appear randomly on frame faces when a queen dies suddenly). Swarm cells are built before the old queen leaves, and the bees construct them deliberately during the season when the colony is thriving. The queen will lay an egg in these cells, and the larvae that develop in them will become new queens.
When you spot these cells, the colony is actively committed to swarming. This isn’t a maybe—it’s a plan. Count how many you see. A single cell might be exploratory, but multiple cells along the bottom edge are the real deal. Check the bottom third of frames first; that’s where they almost always appear.
Reduced Queen Laying Beforehand
A few weeks before swarm cells appear, the queen’s laying rate drops noticeably. This isn’t disease or failure—it’s deliberate. The bees are essentially telling the queen to slow down, and she does. This happens because the colony is preparing to split; a lighter population is easier to manage during the transition.
What you’ll see: fewer eggs and fewer young larvae than normal for the season. If you’ve been checking your hive regularly, you’ll notice the brood pattern becomes patchy. Instead of solid blocks of capped brood, you’ll see gaps. The queen might lay in only half the available cells on a frame instead of filling it densely.
This is tricky because reduced laying can also signal problems like a failing queen, disease, or poor weather. That’s why it matters in context. If your colony is strong, the hive is packed with bees, and you’re in late spring or early summer, reduced laying combined with crowding is swarm prep. If it’s early spring or the hive looks weak, it’s probably something else.
The timing here is important: this slowdown happens 2–4 weeks before queen cells appear. If you catch it early, you have more options. By the time queen cells are built, your window has shrunk significantly.
Crowding and Congestion Signs
Overcrowding is the root cause of swarming. When a colony runs out of space—for brood, for food storage, for the bees themselves to move around—they swarm. So look for signs that the hive is packed.
Open the hive and assess how many frames are occupied. In a two-box setup, are both boxes full of bees? Can you see open space on the frames, or are bees covering nearly every inch? A crowded hive looks busy—thousands of bees clustered on combs with little visible empty comb. You might see bees fanning at the entrance, which they do when ventilation is poor due to overcrowding.
Check the brood nest specifically—the area of the hive where the queen lays eggs and young bees develop. If the queen has nowhere to lay because worker bees have filled available cells with honey and pollen, she can’t expand the brood. The bees sense this constraint and start building swarm cells. Conversely, if you see lots of empty drawn comb, the colony probably isn’t thinking about swarming yet.
Food storage is part of this picture too. If the brood nest is surrounded by frames of capped honey and pollen with only a small area left for brood, the colony feels confined. They’re literally out of room to grow.
The season matters: this crowding sign is most relevant in late spring and early summer when colonies are at peak population and nectar is flowing. In early spring, even a full hive might not swarm because the population is still building.
How Much Time You Have Once You See These
Once you spot queen cells, you’re working against the clock. Queen cells are typically capped around 8 days after the egg is laid. A new queen emerges approximately 16 days from when the egg was laid—meaning she emerges roughly 8 days after the cell is capped. The old queen typically leaves with a swarm before the first new queen emerges, so once you see open or freshly capped queen cells, you may have only days to act.
This means you have about two weeks to act if you want to prevent the swarm or manage it intentionally. Some beekeepers do nothing and let the swarm happen, which is fine if you’re okay losing half your bees. Others split the colony or add space to reduce the urge. If you choose to remove queen cells, have a clear plan first—removing all queen cells without any other action can leave your colony with no way to replace the queen, which is a serious problem.
Don’t wait. If you see multiple queen cells, make a decision within a few days. Waiting until next weekend might mean the swarm has already left.
