Signs of a Queenless Hive
A queenless hive is a hive without an active, laying queen. This happens when a queen dies, gets lost during a mating flight, or fails to start laying after being introduced. Recognizing the signs early gives you the best chance to fix the problem before the colony collapses.
Behavioral Changes to Watch For
The first sign of a queenless hive often shows up in worker bee behavior. Within a few days of losing their queen, workers become noticeably more agitated and disorganized. They’ll move around the hive faster and seem restless, crawling over each other without clear purpose. You might see them clustering in tight groups on the frames instead of working methodically.
Look for bees wandering the entrance during the day, appearing confused. In a normal hive, bees come and go with intention—they’re either foraging, returning with pollen, or doing hive work. Queenless bees often just mill around. You may also notice fewer bees leaving the hive to forage, since there’s no brood to feed and no future to work toward.
Some workers will develop ovaries and start laying eggs themselves—a last-ditch survival attempt. This is a major red flag. If you see multiple eggs scattered randomly across cells (instead of the queen’s single egg per cell), your hive is queenless and has been for at least 10–14 days. These worker-laid eggs only produce drones, which can’t help the colony survive.
Pay attention to how bees react when you open the hive. A queenless colony often becomes more defensive and quick to sting, even if they were calm before. This is partly desperation and partly a loss of the pheromones the queen produces that calm the colony. Conversely, some queenless hives become unusually docile because there’s no brood to defend.
Brood Pattern Changes
The brood pattern—the arrangement of eggs, larvae, and developing bees across the comb—is one of the clearest ways to diagnose a queenless hive. A laying queen produces a tight, organized pattern: most cells in a given area contain eggs or larvae, with few empty cells mixed in. A queenless hive shows the opposite.
If your queen recently died, you’ll see capped brood (cells sealed with a wax cap, containing pupae developing into adult bees) continuing to emerge for about three weeks. But you won’t see any fresh eggs or young larvae. The brood you see will get progressively older with no new generation replacing it. After three weeks, the hive will have almost no brood at all.
Look closely at the cells themselves. Worker-laid eggs are a disaster signal. Workers can’t control egg placement like a queen can—they’ll lay multiple eggs per cell, often on the cell walls rather than the floor. The eggs may be irregularly positioned or clustered. If you see this messy pattern, your hive has been queenless for at least 10–14 days.
Sometimes you’ll spot emergency queen cells—large, peanut-shaped cells (roughly the size of a peanut shell) that bees build when they realize they’re queenless and try to raise a new queen from young larvae. These are different from the small, regular cells where workers and drones develop. If you see these, the hive recognized the problem and is attempting a fix—but success isn’t guaranteed.
In the worst cases, you’ll see a completely empty brood nest with no eggs, no larvae, and no capped brood. Just empty cells. This means the hive has been queenless long enough that all the old brood has emerged and nothing new is being laid.
Sound and Temperament Changes
A healthy hive has a steady, purposeful hum. A queenless hive sounds different—the tone is often higher pitched and more frantic. Some beekeepers describe it as a “distress note.” If you put your ear near the hive entrance, you might hear a noticeably different buzz pattern than your other colonies.
The temperament shift is real and worth noting. Many queenless hives become unusually aggressive. Workers are stressed, there’s no brood to care for, and they’re in survival mode. They may attack without much provocation. Others become lethargic and slow to respond to your presence. Both extremes are warning signs.
Inside the hive, you’ll notice less organized activity. Bees aren’t fanning at the entrance—a behavior where workers stand at the hive opening and beat their wings to ventilate the hive and spread scent—with their usual purpose, they’re not building comb systematically, and they’re not moving resources in a coordinated way. The hive feels chaotic compared to a normal colony.
How Long a Hive Can Survive Queenless
A queenless hive can survive for about 4–6 weeks, depending on the season and available resources. They’ll have capped brood emerging during this time, which keeps the population stable temporarily. But once that brood runs out, the colony declines fast.
If worker bees start laying eggs (a sign they’ve been queenless for 2+ weeks), the hive is in serious trouble. Drone-only brood can’t sustain the colony. At this point, you have maybe 1–2 weeks before the population crashes too far to recover.
Your best move is to act quickly. If you catch it early—within the first week—you can introduce a new queen or combine the hive with a stronger colony. If worker laying has started, combining with a healthy colony is usually the most reliable option, since bees often reject a new queen once they’ve accepted workers laying. Whatever you decide, act without delay.
