Winter Hive Preparation Checklist

Winter preparation separates beekeepers who lose colonies from those who don’t. A few practical steps in fall—treating mites, checking food stores, and weatherproofing—make the difference between a thriving spring and an empty hive. This checklist walks you through what actually matters.

Final Fall Mite Treatment

Varroa mites multiply rapidly in fall and weaken your colony right when bees need to be strong. Treat in late September or early October, before brood production drops off completely. You want mites dead before winter, not multiplying inside the cluster (the tight ball of bees that generates heat during cold months).

Your main options are Apiguard (thymol gel), Apivar (amitraz strips), or oxalic acid. Apiguard works in warm weather and takes two weeks; use it if temperatures stay above 50°F. Apivar strips work in cooler conditions and last six weeks—good for most fall timing. Oxalic acid works year-round but requires more precision and careful application.

Don’t skip this step because you think your colony looks healthy. Mites are invisible at casual inspection. A hive with high mite loads will cluster poorly, consume honey faster, and likely starve or collapse by February. Treat even if you treated in summer—fall populations need a second hit.

After treatment, do a mite check in November. Use the sticky board method: insert a screened bottom board with a white sticky insert for three days, then count mites. Thresholds vary by region; consult your local association. A high count means your treatment didn’t work well enough, and you may face problems.

Ensuring Adequate Honey Stores

A winter colony needs roughly 60–90 pounds of honey depending on your climate. Cold regions need more; mild regions need less. The practical way to know if you have enough: lift the back of the hive. It should feel noticeably heavy. If it feels light, you need to feed.

Do a frame-by-frame check in late September or early October. Pull frames from the brood box and estimate coverage. A fully capped frame of honey (one where bees have sealed the cells with a thin wax layer, indicating the honey is ready for storage) weighs about 4 pounds. Count how many frames are mostly capped honey (not brood, not pollen). Multiply by 4. That’s your rough total. Aim for at least 40–60 pounds total (roughly 10–15 fully capped frames across your brood boxes) for most climates.

If you’re short, feed sugar syrup (2:1 ratio—two parts sugar to one part water by weight) starting in early September. Stop feeding by mid-October so bees have time to cap and process the syrup into stored honey. Late feeding leaves thin, unprocessed syrup that ferments and fails to sustain the colony.

Don’t rely on a honey super left on the hive. Bees cluster (the tight ball of bees that generates heat) in the brood box during winter and often can’t reach honey stored above them. Remove surplus honey supers in early fall, then assess what’s in the brood box itself.

Some beekeepers leave a second brood box (a “deep”) on as insurance. This is practical if your hive is already two deeps, but for a single-deep hive, focus on getting 60+ pounds in that one box. Adding a second box just to store honey often backfires—bees cluster in the lower box and starve with honey above them.

Wind Break and Insulation Setup

Wind kills colonies faster than cold. A hive exposed to winter wind loses heat rapidly and the cluster exhausts itself trying to stay warm. If your hive sits in an open yard, build or plant a windbreak on the north and west sides—the direction winter wind typically comes from in most regions.

A simple windbreak is a row of straw bales or burlap on wooden frames, positioned 3–4 feet away from the hive. Don’t wrap the hive directly; you want airflow underneath to prevent moisture buildup. Moisture inside the hive is worse than cold.

Wrapping the hive itself is optional for beginners and depends on your climate. In mild winters (above 0°F regularly), wrapping is unnecessary and can trap moisture. In harsh winters (regular -10°F nights), a simple wrap reduces heat loss. Use tar paper or commercial hive wrap, leaving the entrance and top ventilation open. Wrap only the sides and back.

Many beekeepers skip wrapping entirely and focus on ventilation instead. Ensure your hive has a small upper entrance or ventilation hole (a notch in the inner cover works) so warm, moist air can escape. This prevents condensation from dripping on the cluster—a real killer.

Insulation boards under the hive (like a piece of rigid foam) reduce ground heat loss if you’re in a cold region. This is nice-to-have, not essential. The cluster generates its own heat; your job is preventing wind and moisture problems, not adding artificial warmth.

Reducing the Entrance for Winter

A large entrance in winter lets cold air pour in and makes the colony work harder to maintain cluster temperature. Reduce the entrance to a 1–2 inch opening using a wooden entrance reducer or a simple wooden block with a hole drilled in it.

This also keeps out mice, which invade hives in late fall and cause real damage. A small entrance forces mice to squeeze through, and many won’t bother. If you see mouse droppings or hear scratching in November, your entrance was too large.

Position the entrance hole toward the top of the entrance board so dead bees and debris can fall out the bottom without blocking the opening. Check the entrance monthly for blockages from dead bees or ice.
