Wax Moth Prevention and Treatment

Wax moths are a real problem for beekeepers, but they’re not a crisis if you know what to watch for and how to respond. The good news is that a healthy, strong hive will defend itself—wax moths are mainly a threat to weak colonies and stored equipment. This guide covers practical steps to prevent them and what to do if they show up anyway.

Keeping a Strong Colony as Prevention

A strong colony is your best defense. Wax moths can’t establish themselves in a hive with plenty of adult bees and a good brood pattern. When a colony is weak—from disease, poor nutrition, or a failing queen—the bees can’t patrol and protect the comb, and that’s when moths move in.

Keep your colony strong by making sure it has enough food year-round. In late summer and fall, confirm your hive has adequate honey stores for your local winter length and climate— check with your local beekeeping association or extension service for the recommended amount in your region, as it varies widely. A hungry colony is a vulnerable one. Ensure your queen is laying well by checking for a solid, consistent brood pattern every two to three weeks during the active season. If you see spotty brood or a queen that’s slowing down, consider requeening.

Avoid overcrowding or leaving too much empty space in the hive. Bees cluster together and regulate their own temperature when the brood nest is tight. Extra empty frames make it harder for them to maintain the warmth and density they need to police the comb. Use a hive body that matches your colony size—if you have a small colony in spring, don’t give it four empty frames to guard.

Varroa mites and diseases like nosema weaken colonies fast. Stay on top of mite monitoring and treatment according to your local recommendations. A colony stressed by pests is far more vulnerable to wax moths.

Storing Empty Comb Without Moth Damage

Empty comb stored outside the hive is defenseless against wax moths. If you extract honey and plan to store frames for reuse, you need a plan to protect them.

The simplest method is to store frames in a sealed, food-grade plastic storage container or a sealed wooden box in a cool place. Wax moths need air circulation and warmth to thrive, so an airtight container in a basement or garage works well. Check the container every few weeks to make sure no moths got in before sealing.

If you store frames in a freezer at 0°F or below for at least 24 hours, any wax moth eggs or larvae will die. This is reliable and requires no chemicals. Many beekeepers freeze extracted frames before storage. Just make sure they’re completely dry first to avoid mold.

Para-dichlorobenzene (PDB) is a chemical fumigant that many beekeepers use. It comes in crystals and you layer them between stacked frames in a sealed box. PDB works, but it’s toxic and has a strong smell—wear gloves, use it outdoors or in a well-ventilated space, and never use it in a hive with bees. You’ll need to air out frames for several days after treatment before the bees will use them again. For beginners, freezing is simpler and safer.

Don’t store comb in a warm, humid shed or garage. Wax moths love those conditions. If you only have a few frames to store, the freezer is your easiest option. If you have many frames, a sealed plastic storage container in a cool basement is practical and inexpensive.

Treating an Active Infestation

If you open a hive and see wax moth larvae—small white caterpillars tunneling through comb—you need to act, but don’t panic. The treatment depends on how bad the infestation is.

If the colony is still strong and the infestation is small (a few affected areas), the bees will often clean it up themselves if you give them time and support. Remove the worst frames and store them away from the hive. Make sure the colony has enough food and isn’t overcrowded. Check again in one to two weeks. Many minor infestations resolve on their own.

If the colony is weak or the infestation is spreading, you have a harder choice. A weak colony can’t recover, and the moths will win. At that point, you can either combine the weak colony with a stronger one (the stronger colony will clean out the moths) or consider closing the hive and starting fresh next season. Trying to save a weak, heavily infested hive usually wastes time and resources.

For stored comb with an active infestation, freezing is your fastest fix. Remove the frames, freeze them for at least 24 hours, then store them sealed. You can also use PDB as described above, but freezing is faster and less hassle.

Never use chemicals like PDB inside an active hive with bees. It will poison the colony.

Signs of Wax Moth Damage

Learn to spot wax moth damage early. The larvae are small, white, and wrinkled—about the size of a grain of rice when newly hatched, growing to half an inch long. You’ll see them tunneling through comb, leaving silken webbing behind as they move.

Damaged comb looks torn and messy, with visible tunnels and webbing. The damage spreads quickly if left unchecked. You might also notice a musty or fermented smell in the hive—that’s a sign of decay in damaged comb.

Check your hive every 7 to 10 days during warm months. Look at the outer frames and any frames that aren’t covered by bees. Wax moths start on the edges where bee coverage is thinnest. Catching them early means easier treatment.
