Signs of Pesticide Exposure in Bees
Pesticides kill bees in two ways: outright poisoning and slow damage to their nervous systems. Learning to spot the signs helps you protect your hive and figure out what went wrong. This guide covers the most visible warning signs and what action to take.
Sudden Population Loss
If your hive drops from 40,000 bees to 10,000 in a few days, pesticide exposure is a real possibility—especially if you didn’t see a disease pattern building beforehand. Healthy colonies lose bees gradually through natural death and seasonal changes. Sudden collapse is different.
The timing matters. If a nearby farmer sprayed crops at dawn or dusk (when bees forage), or if someone sprayed their yard for mosquitoes, and your colony crashes within 24–48 hours, pesticides are likely involved. Organophosphates and pyrethroids (two broad classes of insecticides found in agricultural and garden products) can cause rapid die-offs because they attack the bee’s nervous system directly.
Check your hive’s brood pattern (the arrangement of eggs, larvae, and capped cells across the comb — a healthy pattern is dense and consistent). With pesticide poisoning, you’ll often see the queen still laying, but the adult population just vanishes. With disease, you typically see spotty brood first—missing or discolored pupae—before the population drops. Dead brood is usually a disease sign; missing adult bees is often poison.
Also note whether you find dead bees outside the hive or inside. Pesticide-exposed bees often can’t navigate home, so you may see clusters of dead bees in your yard, on nearby plants, or on the ground far from the hive. If the colony is simply gone with few bodies around, poisoning is more likely than a robbing event (when bees from another colony invade and strip your hive of honey) or absconding (when your entire colony abandons the hive on its own).
Uncoordinated or Trembling Bees
Bees that stumble, shake, or move erratically are showing acute nervous system damage. Neonicotinoids (a class of systemic insecticides absorbed into plant tissue) and organophosphate pesticides (contact and systemic insecticides that disrupt enzyme function in the nervous system) cause this shaking or “trembling” because they disrupt how bee neurons communicate. You might see bees crawling on the landing board (the flat surface at the hive entrance where bees touch down before going inside) unable to fly, or bees inside the hive moving in circles.
These bees are dying. They’re not sick in the way a diseased bee is—they’re poisoned. You may see dozens of them on the bottom board (the floor of the hive) or clustered near the entrance. Some will be partially paralyzed. Unlike a bee with a fungal infection (which moves slowly and looks fuzzy), a poisoned bee looks healthy but behaves like its motor control is failing.
Trembling is a classic sign of acute pesticide exposure, especially from contact poisons sprayed directly on plants where bees are foraging. If you see this behavior and it’s new (not something you’ve observed before), and it appears suddenly across multiple bees in the same day or two, suspect pesticide exposure rather than disease.
Document what you see. Take photos or video if possible. Note the date, time, and weather. Did it rain recently? Rain can wash pesticides off plants and onto surfaces where bees land or forage. Did someone spray nearby? Ask your neighbors—they may have hired a pest control service.
Dead Bees Piled at the Entrance
Healthy hives remove their dead and carry them out. If you see an unusual pile of dead bees at the entrance—not just a few, but dozens or more—and it happened suddenly, pesticide exposure is a strong possibility.
This happens because poisoned bees lose coordination and die before they can fly away or crawl far. They pile up at the entrance because that’s where they were heading when they collapsed. With disease, dead bees are usually scattered or removed by healthy hive-mates over time.
Examine the dead bees closely if you can stomach it. Pesticide-poisoned bees often look physically intact—no visible mold, no discoloration, no oozing. They just look dead. A bee killed by disease may show signs: a swollen abdomen, a fuzzy coating (fungus), or a sunken appearance. Poisoned bees look normal but lifeless.
Count roughly how many are in the pile. If you see 100+ dead bees in one morning and this is abnormal for your hive, document it. This is evidence. Take a photo with something for scale (a coin, your hand). Collect a few dead bees in a clean container if you want to send them to your local agricultural extension office for testing—though testing is not always available or conclusive.
Check the hive’s interior. Is the queen still there? Are bees still present inside? If yes, and the pile is recent, the colony may recover if the pesticide exposure was a one-time event. If the hive is abandoned or nearly empty, the exposure was likely severe.
What to Do If You Suspect Exposure
First, stop the immediate threat if you can. If someone nearby just sprayed, ask them to stop and explain that it kills your bees. Most people don’t realize how sensitive bees are. If it’s agricultural spraying, contact your local agricultural extension office to report it and ask about notification requirements in your area.
Do not treat the colony with additional chemicals—no fungicides, no antibiotics, nothing. The bees are already stressed. Let them recover naturally if they’re going to. Provide clean water and ensure they have enough stored food or feed them with sugar syrup if stores are low.
Contact your local beekeeping association or extension office. Report what you saw, when it happened, and where. They track pesticide incidents and can advise you. Some areas have legal protections for beekeepers; knowing this helps.
If the colony dies, keep the hive in place for a week or two before cleaning it out. This lets you observe whether the problem was temporary or ongoing. Save a few dead bees in a sealed container in case you need them for testing later.
For prevention: scout your area before you place a hive. Are there farms nearby? What do they grow? Are there residential areas with people who might spray? Choose hive locations away from heavy pesticide use when possible. Talk to neighbors early about your bees so they understand why spraying matters.
