How to Recover from a Failed Overwintering

Losing a colony over winter is frustrating, but it happens to many beekeepers—even experienced ones. The good news is that recovery is straightforward, and you’ll learn something valuable in the process. This guide walks you through diagnosing the failure, cleaning up, and getting back on track for the next season.

Diagnosing What Went Wrong

Start by examining the dead colony carefully. Look at the brood box and check where the cluster died. If bees are found tightly clustered at the top of the hive with little or no honey above them, starvation is the likely culprit—they consumed their stores and could not move to reach food elsewhere in the hive. If the cluster is surrounded by honey stores, the problem was probably cold exposure, disease, or a failed queen.

Check for signs of disease. Mold or mildew on frames suggests excessive moisture and poor ventilation. Sunken, perforated cappings with a dark, greasy appearance and a foul smell indicate American foulbrood, a serious disease requiring special cleanup steps and contact with your local apiary inspector. If you see no obvious disease and the frames look clean, starvation or cold stress are more likely.

Weigh what you learned. Did you feed your colony in fall? Did you leave enough honey stores (typically 60–80 pounds for a two-box hive in cold climates)? Was the hive exposed to harsh wind without a windbreak? Did you ventilate the hive to reduce condensation? Your answers will guide what you change next year.

Cleaning and Reusing Equipment Safely

You can reuse most equipment, but do it thoughtfully. If you found no disease, simply scrape off old propolis and wax from the frames, and store everything in a clean, dry place away from pests. Frames with healthy brood patterns are perfectly fine to reuse.

If you suspect disease—especially American foulbrood—do not reuse the frames or brood box. Contact your local apiary inspector before taking any action; in many areas, AFB is a notifiable disease and disposal must follow official guidance, which often means burning the affected equipment. Foulbrood spores can survive for years and will spread to your next colony, so this step is not optional. If you’re unsure whether you’re seeing AFB, treat the situation as if you are until an inspector or experienced beekeeper can confirm otherwise.

The bottom board, inner cover, and outer cover can almost always be cleaned and reused. Scrape them down, wipe with a dry cloth, and inspect for cracks or damage. Replace anything that’s rotting or structurally compromised.

If you used a screened bottom board, check that the screen is intact. If you used solid bottom boards, consider switching to a screened board for your next colony—better ventilation reduces moisture problems that can contribute to winter losses.

Restocking with a New Package or Nuc

You have two main options: buy a 3 lb package of bees with a queen in spring, or get a nucleus colony (called a “nuc”)—a small, established colony on 5 frames with a laying queen, drawn comb, brood, and bees. A 3 lb package is cheaper and gives you a fresh start, but the bees need time to build comb and establish themselves. A nuc is more expensive but arrives with drawn comb and brood already underway, giving you a head start.

For a beginner recovering from a loss, either option works. A 3 lb package with queen is a sensible, economical choice if you’re comfortable waiting a few weeks for the colony to build up. A 5-frame nuc is worth the extra cost if you want faster population growth and a lower-stress restock.

Order early—late winter or early spring—because good packages and nucs sell out fast. Confirm the queen is mated and healthy. When your bees arrive, install them carefully into your cleaned equipment. If you’re reusing frames from the dead colony (and you’ve confirmed there’s no disease), the new colony can draw on any remaining honey stores.

Adjusting Strategy for Next Winter

The most common reason colonies fail in winter is starvation, so your first priority is ensuring adequate food stores. In fall, leave at least 60–80 pounds of honey in a two-box hive if you live in a cold climate. Check your hive in late September or early October; if stores look light, feed sugar syrup or fondant until the bees stop taking it.

Reduce moisture inside the hive. Condensation drips onto the cluster and chills the bees. Ensure your inner cover has a hole for ventilation, or use a ventilation board. Some beekeepers add a thin strip of wood under the inner cover to create an air gap. For winter hive insulation and wrapping practices, follow the guidance of experienced local beekeepers or your regional beekeeping association, as what works best varies significantly by climate.

Reduce drafts without eliminating airflow. A windbreak on the north and west sides helps, but don’t seal the entrance completely. Bees need to fly out on warm days to defecate.

Finally, monitor colony strength going into winter. A weak colony with fewer than four to five frames of bees in October is unlikely to survive in most cold climates—the exact threshold varies by region, so check with local beekeepers for guidance. If your colony is small by mid-fall, consider combining it with another weak colony or accepting that it may not make it through.
